As the India-Australia relationship getting heated up due to a spate of attacks on Indian students, it  pays to watch the statistics. Australian authorities and media have stated that crimes do happen in India and so there is nothing to be alarmed. Sure, crimes do happen in India and elsewhere. But, that is not an excuse. The reason for the crimes are more important. In LA more people die of murders every month than the September 11 attacks, but you cannot equate them both. In Mumbai more people die in metro trains every week than Nov. 26 attacks but they are not the same. What India is worried is whether the cause for the crime is racist. I’m sure most Australians are not racist, but you need to pursue the criminals to find if there is a small minority who are. You need to assure us that you are capable of arresting these petty criminals and prove without doubt they are not racially motivated.

But, more importantly, Australia’s crime stats are alarming if you measure per-capita. Except for murders, Australia has a worse crime rate stats than India. While it is fashionable to say that third world countries like India are crime-ridden and unsafe, the stats don’t say that. India has a lot lower crimes per capita than most countries and lower than we guys assume just that multiplying by billion makes it look big. Although I agree some of the crimes are not reported in India, still there is a huge difference. I hope you guys take the stats and use the crimes against Indians as an excuse to start a  war on criminals.

Balaji,
Statistics are whatever you want them to be. A fair percentage of Indian crimes do not get reported and the reported ones do not get resolved. Did you know that Indians just bash burglars if they catch them and not report it to the (incompetent) police ? I've lived in India and I've seen it.

"Australian authorities and media have stated that crimes do happen in India and so there is nothing to be alarmed" - don't add to the stupidity by quoting out of context.

"I’m sure most Australians are not racist, but you need to pursue the criminals to find if there is a small minority who are" - what are you doing about it in India ? What are your views on the Australian missionary burnt along with his two sons in Orissa ? Who was caught ? You rant about crime being solved (as if it were a piece of cake) - why have you got the big furore in India regarding "Justice for Ruchika" where IPS officers were involved and got away with it.

By the way did you also care to find out that a large number of Indians who have lived in Australia are not particularly inclined to having half-wit morons coming from India, living in clans, 10 to a house who are lecherous, do not know how to conduct themselves and are stupid enough to live in areas more prone to violence (cause they are too cheap to live in a better location and/or they are too busy sending money back home) and more stupid for taking unnecessary risks - hanging around known trouble spots. Now before you rant about how everything should be really secure - ask an Indian woman if she is happy to walk around your capital city alone after 7pm. I know the answer because 2 of them who were born and brought up in Delhi said you would have to be stupid to do so.

"What India is worried is whether the cause for the crime is racist" - what a load of bullshit! India has more discrimination - race, colour, religion, caste etc than anywhere else in the world. They just don't whine about it in India because nobody gives a shit over there.

Simply - if you don't like it here - GO BACK!

Australia is very unsafe place. Its unsafe for Indians. Indians are so scared they don't come out after 7PM. They are not able to enjoy their life. In this case India is much better than these places. So better to live in India instead of going anywhere else.

having lived in both countries and many other. India, at the face value, seems more dangerous, primarily since the living conditions are poor and filthy. However having said that, it is one of the safest countries. The chances you'll get mugged / harmed / raped in India is far less than most countries. Most poor parts of the country are just that - poor. Whereas in most other countries poor parts are plain criminal hubs.
